Foster Collaboration

HMPSN serves as a hub for collaboration, facilitating connections among professionals, researchers, and organizations involved in hyperbaric medicine. Through conferences, workshops, and networking events, the association promotes the exchange of ideas, experiences, and innovative approaches within the field.

Training

A cornerstone of HMPSN’s activities is the provision of comprehensive educational programs and training initiatives. These programs are designed to equip healthcare professionals with the latest knowledge and skills necessary for the safe and effective administration of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Standards and Best Practice

HMPSN actively contributes to the development and dissemination of industry standards and best practices. This includes guidelines for treatment protocols, facility accreditation criteria, and equipment standards, ensuring a uniform and high level of care across the hyperbaric medicine community.

Facilitate Research

HMPSN actively supports and encourages research endeavors aimed at expanding the scientific knowledge surrounding hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This includes investigating new applications, elucidating the physiological mechanisms, and assessing the therapeutic efficacy of HBOT across diverse medical conditions.

Our History

The history of the Hyperbaric Medical Professionals Society of Nigeria (HMPSN) is rooted in the evolution of offshore oil exploration in Nigeria, which began in the 1950s. As operations expanded, healthcare services were provided on oil rigs and vessels by a mix of expatriate and indigenous medical workers, including offshore medics, doctors, and nurses. However, the specialized demands of offshore commercial diving projects revealed a significant gap in local expertise in underwater and hyperbaric medicine, necessitating reliance on expatriate professionals.

Recognizing this critical need, Dr. Adesola Osidipe and Dr. Austin Okogun spearheaded efforts to address the deficit by initiating a network of Nigerian offshore medics and doctors with an interest in hyperbaric and underwater medicine. This initiative led to the training of more Nigerians in these fields at international institutions in countries like South Africa and the United Kingdom. By 2017, a cadre of qualified Nigerian diving doctors was actively participating in offshore projects and occupational medicine.

On August 10, 2017, the HMPSN was formally established with Dr. Adesola Osidipe as its founding president. The society’s core mission was to develop local expertise in diving medicine, ensure safe commercial diving operations, and collaborate with key stakeholders, including the Nigerian government, diving contractors, and professional associations. Under Dr. Osidipe’s leadership until 2018, HMPSN laid a strong foundation for this vision.

In April 2018, the Factories (Divers at work) Regulation was signed into Law. As key members of the diving community in Nigeria, Dr. Adesola Osidipe and Dr. Austin Okogun continued with sustained efforts to grow a society where healthcare professionals bring to bear their training to fulfil a local content quota.

Dr. Kayode Ogunleye succeeded Dr. Osidipe as president, expanding the society’s membership and enhancing its public presence. His tenure was marked by significant achievements, including hosting the first-ever diving summit in Nigeria, which boosted stakeholder confidence and further established HMPSN’s role in advancing diving medical practice in the region.

Today, under new leadership, HMPSN continues to grow and strengthen its impact in Nigeria and West Africa, upholding its commitment to promoting safety and excellence in underwater and hyperbaric medicine.
