The Hyperbaric Medical Practitioners Society of Nigeria (HMPSN)

We are a scientific society dedicated towards promoting the practice and facilitating the study of all aspects of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine in Nigeria.

HMPSN is a project-oriented body of consummate professionals in the Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine field who seek to be actively involved in activities directed at empowering her members with the requisite knowledge and network required to contribute meaningfully towards improving the quality of practice, safety and advocacy in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine in the country and in so doing impact the diving community and the general public at large.

HMPSN collaborates with the Ministry of Labour and other relevant stakeholders to promote the regulations for Diving/Hyperbaric Medicine as stipulated in Nigeria’s Diving at Work Regulation 2018 and as espoused by the Nigerian Government. HMPSN also works with the Department of Petroleum Resources to advance the science of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine and related scientific disciplines within the country.

The goal of HMPSN is to continue to grow a strong network of medical professionals, aware of global health issues and responsive to current questions facing the medical profession, particularly Diving/Hyperbaric Medicine in Nigeria.

What We Do

The Hyperbaric Medical Professionals Society of Nigeria (HMPSN) is dedicated to advancing the field of underwater and hyperbaric medicine while ensuring the safety and efficiency of diving operations in Nigeria and beyond. Our core activities include:

  1. Medical Oversight of Commercial Diving Activities
HMPSN provides expert medical oversight to ensure the health and safety of divers during commercial diving operations. This includes pre-dive medical evaluations, real-time monitoring of diver health, and management of medical emergencies related to diving.
  2. Training of Dive Medical Experts
We are committed to building local capacity by training Nigerian doctors and medics in diving and hyperbaric medicine. Our programs prepare professionals to address the unique medical challenges associated with underwater environments.
  3. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
HMPSN promotes and facilitates the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for the treatment of various medical conditions, including decompression sickness, non-healing wounds, and certain infections, providing access to cutting-edge healthcare solutions.
  4. Collaboration with Government and Dive Contractors
To ensure efficient and safe diving operations, HMPSN collaborates with government agencies, diving contractors, and professional associations to develop and implement robust diving regulations and standards.
  5. Research and Dive-Related Scientific Activities
HMPSN fosters research and innovation in diving medicine and related scientific fields. Our focus includes studying the physiological impacts of diving, developing new treatment protocols, and sharing findings through publications and conferences.

Through these activities, HMPSN plays a pivotal role in enhancing the safety, efficiency, and medical expertise of Nigeria’s diving industry.

What is Hyperbaric Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy or HBOT or HBO therapy is a treatment procedure that takes place inside an air sealed, transparent chamber filled with 100% pure oxygen in an increased atmospheric pressure. The process aids the body to absorb oxygen in a greater amount and transports it to the blood cells, blood plasma, cerebral-spinal fluid, and other body fluids. Sufficient oxygen content in the affected tissues promote healing and provide relief.

Uses of HBOT

Many doctors and clinical researchers in the field of hyperbaric medicine believe that HBOT benefits more conditions beyond the 13 FDA approved indications. These uses include autism, cancer, concussion, general health and wellness, mental health, neurology, sports performance and recovery, traumatic brain injury, and many more. Please visit our resources page to increase your understanding of the many uses of hyperbaric treatments.
